The terms BWP and BWR — along with “marine plywood” — are among the most misused and misunderstood terms in the Indian interior design industry. This guide explains exactly what each means and what you must insist on for your project.
Quick Summary Table
| Term | Full Form | IS Standard | Truly Waterproof? | Use in Kitchen? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marine Plywood | — | IS:710 (BWP) | ✅ Yes | ✅ Mandatory |
| BWP | Boiling Water Proof | IS:710 | ✅ Yes | ✅ Mandatory |
| BWR | Boiling Water Resistant | Often IS:303 | ❌ No | ❌ Never |
| MR | Moisture Resistant | IS:303 | ❌ No | ❌ Never |
| Commercial Ply | — | IS:303 | ❌ No | ❌ Never |
The Chemistry Behind the Difference
When plywood is manufactured, the wood veneers need to be bonded together. The type of adhesive resin determines the water resistance grade:
-
Phenol Formaldehyde (PF) Resin: Used in IS:710 BWP. PF resin is a thermoset polymer — once cured, it is chemically inert and does not dissolve or soften in water, even at 100°C. This is what makes IS:710 genuinely waterproof.
-
Urea Formaldehyde (UF) Resin: Used in IS:303 MR/BWR. UF resin is moisture-resistant under normal humidity, but begins to break down under sustained water contact. This is why IS:303 fails in kitchen and bathroom applications.
Why This Matters More in Odisha
Bhubaneswar’s average relative humidity during monsoon months (June–September) regularly exceeds 85%. This means even IS:303 “moisture resistant” plywood is under constant stress in a kitchen environment — before any direct water contact even occurs.
In contrast, IS:710 marine plywood was specifically engineered for applications in ships, boats, and coastal structures where constant water exposure is expected.
The Market Confusion Problem
Unscrupulous suppliers and contractors have muddied the waters (pun intended) by marketing IS:303 products with terms like:
- “Marine quality”
- “BWR marine grade”
- “Waterproof commercial ply”
None of these products are IS:710 certified marine plywood. The only way to verify is the ISI mark embossed on the plywood sheet and the IS:710 number.
How to Verify at AK Plywood
When you buy material from us — or when we use material in your project:
- Physically show you the sheet with the ISI mark and IS:710 number embossed
- Provide the purchase invoice from CenturyPly or Greenply showing the specific product code
- Give you a written material warranty specifying the exact board used in your kitchen
This transparency is the factory-direct advantage. No middlemen, no substitution risk.
