Protecting Your Interiors from the Odisha Monsoon
The monsoon in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack is brutal on interior woodwork. The humidity spikes, walls become damp, and suddenly your wardrobe shutters won’t close properly because the wood has swollen.
If you don’t build your home defensively, you will replace your kitchen every 4 years.
1. Stop Using MDF and Particle Board
This is the most critical rule for coastal/high-humidity cities. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) acts like a sponge. Even ambient humidity in the air can cause MDF edges to swell and burst. Never let a contractor use MDF for your kitchen carcases or wardrobe frameworks.
2. Demand IS:710 Marine Grade Plywood
At AK Interiors, we exclusively use IS:710 BWP (Boiling Water Proof) Marine Plywood for all wet zones (Kitchens, Bathrooms, Balconies). This plywood uses Phenol Formaldehyde resin, which is 100% waterproof. The humidity won’t affect it.
3. Polyurethane (PU) Edge Banding
Water usually enters plywood through the exposed cut edges. If your edge banding (the PVC strip on the edge of the door) is glued by hand using Fevicol, the moisture will eventually melt the adhesive, and the tape will peel off. We use Italian edge banding machines operating at 200°C with waterproof PUR glue to hermetically seal every single edge of our modular furniture.
4. Silica Gel & Ventilation
For existing wardrobes, keep silica gel packets or moisture-absorbing boxes inside the lower drawers. During dry spells in the monsoon, open all windows and wardrobe doors to allow trapped damp air to escape.
