Our Verdict

Use IS:710 for Kitchens and Bathrooms (Wet Zones). Use IS:303 for Bedrooms and Living Rooms (Dry Zones).

The Ultimate Plywood Standard Breakdown

Walking into a plywood shop and asking for “good ply” is a surefire way to be overcharged. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) clearly defines the biochemical makeup and testing threshold of plywood through specific IS (Indian Standard) codes.

The two most critical codes you must understand are IS:303 and IS:710.

IS:303 — Boiling Water Resistant (Commercial Ply)

Also known as BWR Grade, this is the standard commercial interior plywood.

  • Glue Used: MUF (Melamine Urea Formaldehyde) synthetic resin.
  • Testing Standard: The plywood must withstand being submerged in boiling water for 8 hours without delaminating (the layers peeling apart).
  • Best For: Dry areas. Bedroom wardrobes, TV units, beds, and living room paneling.

IS:710 — Boiling Water Proof (Marine Ply)

Also known as BWP Grade, this is true Marine Plywood designed to withstand extreme moisture.

  • Glue Used: Undiluted Phenol Formaldehyde synthetic resin (which gives the plywood core a distinct dark reddish/brown color).
  • Testing Standard: It must withstand a grueling 72-hour continuous boil test without any signs of delamination.
  • Best For: Wet areas. Kitchen base cabinets, bathroom vanities, and balcony furniture.

The Manufacturer Warning

Many local unbranded companies print “IS:710” on their ISI-mark stamps even if the plywood inside is actually commercial grade. Always buy from authorized dealers (like AK Plywood) where CenturyPly and Greenply guarantee authentic IS-certified lab testing.
