MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) vs Plywood
MDF vs Plywood for furniture and interiors in India. Complete comparison on strength, moisture resistance, cost, and which to choose for kitchens and wardrobes.
Plywood is almost always the better choice for Indian homes, especially in humid coastal cities like Bhubaneswar. MDF is acceptable only for painted furniture in dry, AC rooms. Never use MDF in kitchens, bathrooms, or high-humidity environments.
What is MDF?
Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made from fine wood fibres bonded with resin under high heat and pressure. It has no grain orientation, making it extremely consistent.
However, it is the weakest, most moisture-sensitive category of engineered wood commonly sold in India.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | MDF | Commercial Plywood (IS:303) |
|---|---|---|
| Water Resistance | Very Poor | Moderate (MR Grade) |
| Screw Holding | Poor | Excellent |
| Weight | Heavy | Lighter |
| Surface for Paint | Excellent (smooth) | Good |
| Surface for Laminate | Good | Excellent |
| Termite Resistance | Poor | Treated & Protected |
| Strength | Low | High |
| Price | 30–40% cheaper | Standard |
The Fatal Flaw of MDF in India
Indian kitchens generate enormous amounts of steam and moisture. Even “moisture-resistant” MDF (often sold as “moisture-proof” by unscrupulous vendors) is not truly waterproof. Once moisture enters MDF, the fibre matrix expands and does not contract back. The board crumbles permanently.
This is why your ₹2 Lakh kitchen built with MDF carcasses by a cheap contractor looks like ₹20,000 of swollen rubble in the base cabinets after 3 monsoons.
When MDF is Acceptable
- Painted shutter faces in dry living rooms or study rooms (not kitchens or bathrooms)
- CNC routing for decorative elements like Pooja jaali work, where the intricate cuts require the grain-less consistency of MDF
- Back panels of wardrobes in dry, AC bedrooms
Our Verdict
At AK Interiors, we never use bare MDF for structural furniture carcasses. Plywood — whether commercial IS:303 for dry areas or marine IS:710 for wet areas — is our baseline standard, regardless of the project budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MDF cheaper than plywood?
Yes, MDF is typically 30–40% cheaper than branded commercial plywood. However, the long-term cost of replacement when MDF swells makes plywood the better value over the life of the furniture.
Can MDF be used for kitchen cabinets?
No, absolutely not. MDF is extremely susceptible to moisture. Even steam from Indian cooking causes MDF to swell and crumble at the base of kitchen cabinets within 2–3 years. Always use IS:710 marine plywood for kitchens.
Which is better for painting: MDF or plywood?
MDF gives a far smoother, more consistent surface for painting (especially PU and enamel paints). If you need painted furniture in a dry interior room, MDF is a valid cost-saving choice for the shutter face only.
