Plywood vs Particle Board — Why Particle Board is a Risk

Our Verdict

Plywood is objectively superior to particle board in every performance metric except initial cost. Particle board may save ₹50,000 on a 3BHK interior, but the replacement cost within 5–7 years far exceeds that initial saving. We never use particle board in any of our projects.

What is Particle Board?

Particle board (also called chipboard) is made from compressed wood chips and sawdust bonded with resin. It is the cheapest category of engineered wood — and the weakest.

It is widely used in flat-pack furniture (IKEA-style) where components are designed for light use. It is not appropriate for built-in residential furniture in Indian conditions.

The Screw-Holding Problem

The most critical failure of particle board in Indian homes is screw holding strength. When a heavy kitchen shutterweight pulls on a hinge screw embedded in particle board, the board crumbles around the screw. Hinges come off, shelves sag.

Plywood’s cross-grain construction gives it exceptional screw holding capacity — screws grip tightly perpendicular to the grain, creating a strong mechanical bond.

The Moisture Problem

In Bhubaneswar’s humidity, particle board near kitchen bases (where water spills occur) will swell visibly within 1–2 monsoon seasons. Once swollen, it cannot recover. The entire cabinet must be dismantled and rebuilt.

Our Guarantee to Clients

At AK Interiors & Plywood, we provide a written guarantee that no particle board, MDF core, or hollow-board is used in any structural furniture we build. You can inspect the raw materials at our factory before production begins.

This is the factory-direct advantage — you see exactly what you’re paying for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is particle board used for in interior design?

Particle board (also called chip board) is used by budget furniture manufacturers for wardrobe carcasses, commercial shelving, and flat-pack furniture. It is NOT suitable for Indian residential interiors due to moisture vulnerability.

How can I tell if a contractor is using particle board?

Ask for and inspect the material before it is installed. Particle board is tan/grey in colour, has no visible wood grain or veneer layers, and weighs significantly more than plywood for the same size. The edges are distinctively rough with visible compressed wood chips.
