Laminates — Frequently Asked Questions

Thickness, finish types, brand comparisons, and everything you need to know about choosing the right laminate for your furniture.

01What is the difference between laminate and sunmica?

Sunmica is actually a brand name (by Formica) that became a generic term in India for all decorative laminates. All sunmica is laminate, but not all laminate is Sunmica-brand. It is manufactured by pressing decorative paper layers between resin sheets under high heat and pressure.

02What laminate thickness should I use for kitchen shutters?

1mm (1.0mm) laminate is the standard for all cabinet and wardrobe shutter faces. 0.8mm is used for curved surfaces or as interior shelf liners. Never use 0.8mm on shutter faces that see daily use — it chips at edges over time.

03Is high-gloss laminate better than matte?

Neither is universally better. High-gloss looks sleek and is easy to wipe clean, but shows every fingerprint and scratch. Super-matte is fingerprint-invisible and has a luxurious tactile feel, but can show water marks if left to dry. For Indian kitchens in 2026, super-matte is the more practical premium choice.

04Which laminate brand is best in India?

For premium decorative laminates: Merino, Greenlam, and Formica are the top three. For best value in the mid-range: CenturyLaminates and Advance Decorative. All are available at AK Plywood's showroom in Bhubaneswar with full sheet display samples.

05What is anti-fingerprint laminate?

Anti-fingerprint (AFP) or anti-scratch laminates have a nano-coating on the surface that repels oil and grease. They are perfect for kitchens and children's room furniture. Merino Super Matte and Greenlam's anti-fingerprint range are the most popular options in this category.

06Can laminate be used on walls?

Yes. Laminates are increasingly used on feature walls in living rooms, TV walls, and headboard walls in bedrooms. High-pressure laminates (HPL) with 1mm thickness on a 12mm MDF or plywood substrate create a premium wall cladding at far lower cost than wallpaper or stone.

07How do I calculate how many laminate sheets I need for my kitchen?

Measure your total shutter face area in sq ft. Each 8×4 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft. Add 15–20% for wastage, especially with pattern-matched or grain-specific laminates. A standard L-shape kitchen typically requires 18–24 sheets for shutter faces.

08What is PVC laminate vs HPL laminate?

HPL (High Pressure Laminate) is manufactured with Kraft paper and melamine resin at 1000+ psi pressure — it's rigid, durable, and what you want for furniture. PVC laminate is a thin plastic film, often used for edge-banding and wrapping MDF profiles. HPL is the correct choice for flat shutter faces.

09How long does laminate last?

Quality HPL laminate (Merino, Greenlam) on a good plywood substrate lasts 15–25 years with ordinary cleaning. Edge chips are the most common failure point — quality edge banding with matching tape is critical to longevity.

10Can I change the laminate on existing cabinets?

Not practically. Laminate is bonded with contact cement to the plywood substrate. Removing it without damaging the plywood is rarely possible. It is more cost-effective to replace the shutter panel entirely than to re-laminate existing shutters.

11What is the latest laminate trend in 2026?

Super-matte and anti-fingerprint textures are dominant in 2026. Specific design trends: synchronized wood-grain textured laminates (the texture and print match precisely), charcoal and deep navy matte tones, and warm natural wood grains in walnut and teak for bedroom wardrobes.
